Nigel CollinsHaving worked previously in a range of fine art media, I am now using photography exclusively and have recently exhibited with IPSE, the Royal Photographic Society, the Cotswold Monochrome Group and others. The formal elements of picture-making have always been as important to me as the message which a work might convey. I have been influenced more perhaps from outside the practice (e.g. Ben Nicholson, for his values of space, line and texture) but I do admire the work of modernist photographers like Moholy-Nagy Aircraft and aviation have been an interest of mine for a while, particularly since I spent some years flying gliders at any and every opportunity! This selection is from a body of work exploring the iconography of Cold War military aircraft, the Twentieth Century symbol of absolute power (and technology on the ragged edge). The pictures have been made as silver gelatin prints on a fibre base, gold-toned for colour. Other work in the series uses a variety of methods and includes large-scale prints and an installation. |

IPSE is a loose organisation of independently-minded photographers who share a passion for photography, but who prefer to 'plough their own furrow'. IPSE acts as a support group for its members, providing talks, residential weekends, evening meetings and periodic exhibitions - all within an atmosphere of encouragement and non-competitiveness. |
